Self-Sufficient Housing Competition Entry: deBox

Our proposal is based on a critique of the physical and social consequences of big-box retailing, and poses an alternative to suburban neighborhoods. We describe a development scenario in which abandoned big-box structures are modified to create a large-scale trellis for self-built, modular homes. Parts of the existing big-box structure are preserved for community purposes, other areas are reserved for open-space, to create new, sustainable and multi-use neighborhoods.
