High Density on the Ground Competition:
Throughout southern Louisiana the Creole and Cajun people have a long culinary tradition exemplified by the family Gumbo. In my own family, the Gumbo recipe was handed down through the generations, modified and personalized along the way. It is a grand meal - an assemblage of diverse ingredients - Roux, Okra, Onions, Bell Peppers, Sausage, Blue Crab, Gulf Shrimp - that somehow blend together to become a whole, unified (and delicious!) recipe. The traditions behind this meal are analogous to the culture and architectural heritage of New Orleans and Louisiana - a complex and diverse blend of influences that come together as a unified feast.
The ingredients for this project are pulled from the local context, and transformed into a new and exciting urban environment that comes together as an integral high density settlement. As in my family, the recipe is shared and modified, here creating a new housing prototype for re-building on the high ground.
