Lawrence Community Works (LCW) is creating a sustainable, resilient, mixed-use community on an ex-industrial site.  It features open space (Ellen Swallow Richards Park), nature (the Merrimack River and the mill canal), affordable housing, cultural and non-profit institutions and commerce.

Our design, in collaboration with Abacus Architects + Planners and Highmark Land Design, provides the centerpiece of this development, with 80 units of affordable housing, community and recreational spaces.  Open space flows around the buildings to create connections for Lawrence citizens and LCW residents to access the park, the river, as well as passive and active outdoor activities. Adjoining the south (Phase 2) building is a SquashBusters afterschool center, designed by Stack + Co.

The project is built to the highest level of energy efficiency, as a Passive House certified project.  It features all-electric (no natural gas) heating and cooling, with photovoltaic panel arrays on the rooftops.  The buildings reinforce healthy lifestyles via Fitwell principles of access to fitness and outdoor activities, ample fresh air and views, and excellent indoor air quality.
